About Our Sister Pub

The Wheatshead at Bough Beech

Visit our sister pub, The Wheatsheaf at Bough Beech

Like most historic buildings, The Wheatsheaf has seen many changes over the centuries, but as a Grade II listed building, we keep it as true to its heritage as possible. Believed to have been built around the end of the 14th century, clues to its age and previous owners have at times been uncovered during renovations. These include a rare medieval crown post in the roof timbers, and a section of wattle-and-daub wall reading ‘1607 Foxy Holanby’, who is believed to have been a local squire. In Tudor times, it was a splendid hunting lodge serving Hever Castle, and is rumoured to have been a favourite retreat Henry VIII – surely because of its welcoming atmosphere, and not its proximity to the home of Anne Boleyn …

The Wheatsheaf is still a firm local favourite today, with the interior divided into a number of smaller areas, each with their own individual charm, while outside a large terrace to the front is a lovely spot to watch the world go by on a sunny day. Come on in for a look at the many fascinating artefacts to be found throughout, such as our stained glass panel depicting the 600 Squadron Auxiliary Air Force crest, found during renovations and given pride of place behind the bar.

Now known for beautifully-prepared, locally-sourced food and a fine selection of wines and real ales, The Wheatsheaf is a cosy haven in the winter with roaring log fires and in the summer, soak up the sun on our beautiful terrace. Cyclists, horse riders, walkers and dogs are always welcome, and with plenty of parking available there’s every reason to visit – so what are you waiting for?
